Dangers of Depression (Group Work)


  • Use Pencil!

  • Copy the Reading Purpose on top of the article S.W.B.A.T. identify and reflect on various ideas in the article by Writing in the Margins and Marking the Text.

  • Number the Paragraphs

  • Scan the text and squiggly line vocabulary words (from vocab chart)

  • Read the article (DO NOT MARK IT)

  • Reread the article and circle appropriate items (use yellow handout)

  • Respond in the Margins for at least 3 paragraphs. Label the type of response you are using (i.e. connect, respond, visualize, etc).

  • Paragraph Reflection-write a paragraph summarizing the article and reflecting on your opinion about the article and about if you feel that Holden should be on medication and why/why not?

Neurological (1): the scientific study of the nervous system and its diseases
Psychopharmacology (2): the branch of pharmacology dealing with the psychological effects of drugs
Zoloft (2): A trademark used for the drug sertraline (an antidepressant)
Lithium (4): used in the treatment of bipolar disorder (disorder characterized by periods of mania alternating with periods of depression, usually mixed with relatively long intervals of normal mood.
Amphetamines (5): a drug that gives you a feeling of excitement and a lot of energy
Potent (6): having a very powerful effect or influence on your body or mind
Sedatives (7): a drug used to make someone calm or go to sleep
